Painting Workshop – Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Guide

The Painting Workshop in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a mysterious location that the true purpose of can be difficult to uncover. So what can you do there?

This page acts as a comprehensive breakdown of how to complete the Painting Workshop location in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

How to Access the Painting Workshop

How you access the Painting Workshop is in and of itself part of the solution to the puzzle to the zone. Dotted across the world map of the Continent, you’ll actually find 3 different entrances to the Painting Workshop, which look like swirling portals inside a painting frame – and you need to access them all.

Entrance 1

The first entrance you’ll be able to access is northeast of Stone Wave Cliffs, and can be accessed by swimming across to it with Esquie.

Once inside, you’ll need to platform your way across the various painting and frame shards and then speak with the Faceless Boy. Select “We Will” to help him and you’ll receive the Light of the Beast item.

Continue your way platforming down and interact with the large statue in the center of the space. This will add the Light of the Beast to the statue, and complete this section.

Entrance 2

The next entrance you can find is northwest of Forgotten Battlefield (south of Monoco’s Station).

Head inside and platform your way across the various painting and frame shards and then speak with the Faceless Boy. Select “We Will” to help him and you’ll receive the Colour of the Beast item.

Continue your way platforming down and interact with the large statue in the center of the space. This will add the Colour of the Beast to the statue, and complete this section.

Entrance 3

The final entrance can be found on a floating island to the east of Sirene.

You cannot reach this entrance until Act 3 at the very end of the game. Esquie will gain the ability to fly, opening up much more of the map!

Head inside and platform your way across the various painting and frame shards and then speak with the Faceless Boy. Select “We Will” to help him and you’ll receive the Shape of the Beast item.

Continue your way platforming down and interact with the large statue in the center of the space. This will add the Shape of the Beast to the statue, and complete this section.

Lampmaster Fight

With those three items inserted into the statue, the large magical barrier covering the entrance to the arena at the back of the Workshop will dissipate. Grapple across the gap and head up the steps to begin a fight against a Lampmaster boss.

This Lampmaster has most of the same attacks as the one you encountered in Stone Wave Cliffs at the end of Act I, but will have a higher health total and will pack a more powerful punch. This includes the projectiles being shot from its various lamps. Pay attention to the order in which the lamps light up and then Free Aim shoot them in that order to disrupt its sword of light attack.

Keep in mind that the Lampmaster can also apply Dizzy if you get hit by it, making it that much harder to accurately aim with your Free Aim shots. With its melee attacks it can also apply Blight, which reduces your max Health. Consider collecting the Anti-Blight Pictos if it’s causing you trouble, or equipping Verso, Lune, or Sciel with a skill that can cleanses or dispel

There is also the 4-hit flying combo, with the fourth hit being delayed after the Lampmaster floats backward temporarily before swinging forward. Additionally you have the “attack with each arm” combo which consists of 7 hits compared to the 4 hits of Act I’s counterpart.

For additional details, see the Lampmaster Boss Fight Guide for a reminder.

Painting Workshop Rewards

By defeating it, you’ll receive the At Death’s Door and Energising Attack I Pictos, along with a Recoat and 3 Grandiose Chroma Catalysts. You can then exit the arena and speak with the Faceless Boy standing next to the painting/portal exit and you’ll receive a Perfect Chroma Catalyst, which lets you upgrade a weapon to max level – Level 33.

You’ll also earn the trophy / achievement called Noir et Blanc.
