Concrete Canvas has, once again, returned for 2026 – and walking into the city centre in May feels like stepping into a living gallery. As the owner of Turner Art Perspective, I’ve had the privilege of watching this festival evolve from a bold idea into one of the most exciting public art events in the east of England.
Concrete Canvas isn’t just about murals – it’s about transforming the fabric of community life.
Blank walls, electrical cabinets, even CCTV bases become vibrant narratives, each one a marker of place, people, and pride.
This year, the trail spreads wider than ever, with contributions from artists rooted in Chelmsford, Essex and further afield, each bringing their unique voice to our urban landscape. What excites me most as a gallery owner isn’t just the aesthetic – it’s the ecology of creativity this festival fosters.
From seasoned muralists to emerging local makers, Concrete Canvas has blurred the lines between ‘institutional’ art spaces and the pulse of city life. Passers-by become participants, stopping to watch spray cans hiss and drips dry; families and friends follow the map, discovering unexpected works with the same delight one might feel in an exhibition hall. The festival weekend – a celebration with live painting, interactive workshops, music and market stalls – has become a beacon for inclusive cultural engagement. It reminds me that art need not be distant or curated behind glass; it can be communal, lived, and joyously unpredictable.
