Tasmanian artist and disability advocate Janelle McMillian is using her unique artwork to promote alternative ways of communication with non-verbal community members.
McMillian, who creates digital artwork and is a wheelchair user with severe cerebral palsy, hosted a ‘Shop, Share and Care’ stall at the Salamanca Market on Saturday.
Despite her non-verbal status, McMillian has found a way to express herself creatively through digital art and writing, which she sells on canvas prints, mugs, postcards and books.
Variety Tasmania chief executive Mohammed Aldergham thanked McMillian for donating her proceeds from the market to the children’s charity.
“We’re so grateful Janelle is generously donating the proceeds of her beautiful artwork to Variety,” he said.
“We will use the funds to run programs such as our Motor Mouth Camp for non-verbal children who use communication devices.”
