It can be easy to designate particular objects to specific rooms in the home. For example, kitchens are for food, and living spaces are for hanging wall art. I am a firm believer that art can be hung in any room in the home, and I felt vindicated to see a gorgeous piece in Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s kitchen.
Chrissy Teigen’s kitchen is practically as familiar as my own after watching her create delicious recipes in her marble kitchen for years. Now, as a celebrity style editor, I spend my days thinking about spaces owned by the likes of Teigen, and it’s the reason I came across my favorite stand-out feature to date. Yes, while the modern neutral materials are beautiful, one piece recently caught all my attention.
In an Instagram post recently shared by Legend on Instagram, we can see that the couple has placed a ruffled fabric tapestry next to their pleated, cream curtains. The folds in the piece are perfectly complementary against the curtains, and serve as a contrast against the smooth marble countertops and wood cabinets. If you’re looking for incentive to decorate your kitchen with unexpected art, we have some thoughts.
Placing art in the home is a highly personal process. A piece that connects with one homeowner may not with another, and that is the beauty of it. However, there are some styling and hanging tips I have picked up that can be followed broadly, regardless of what piece is being hung.
First and foremost, ensure that there is negative space around art. Notice that there is still ample wall space behind Teigen and Legend’s kitchen piece, allowing it to really breathe and stand out. Even gallery walls require a bit of spacing; otherwise, a wall will look crowded and visually unappealing.
Additionally, I recommend looking at a room’s existing color palette when incorporating statement pieces to a space, and this is especially true for a kitchen.
Teigen and Legend have opted for a light, neutral palette featuring soft creams and warm woods. This is a go-to palette choice as it creates an inviting and chic atmosphere. If working with brighter colors, try to pull out key tones from a statement piece and incorporate them into other accessories and furnishings.

Another factor to consider when hanging art is scale. If you have soaring ceilings in your kitchen, take advantage of that with a long piece like Teigen and Legend’s.
However, if your kitchen has lower ceilings but plenty of horizontal wall space, think about incorporating work that will fit accordingly.
Finally, lighting is also just as crucial to an art’s suitability in a space as the artwork itself. Natural light that comes in through windows is a definite plus, but if you don’t have big windows, spotlights that will accentuate statement art are a worthwhile investment.
Below, I’ve handpicked some unique pieces of art that would look fantastic in any neutral kitchen.

Above all, try to incorporate pieces in the home that you feel emotionally connected to. They will make your house feel like a home regardless of design aesthetic. Now I hope everyone can enjoy glimpses in the couple’s kitchen as much as I do.
