Lunchtime Lectures: From Canvas to Curtain: Art in Opera Production

Step into a world where opera is shaped as much by the eye as by the ear. In this talk, opera singer and BBC opera consultant Helen Astrid will examine how great works of fine art have inspired some of the most striking opera productions seen on the international stage.

Drawing on vivid examples, Helen will trace the influence of painters such as Bruegel, Caravaggio, and Titian on directors and designers who have transformed operatic storytelling into powerful visual experiences. From the rustic energy behind Barrie Kosky’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at The Bayreuth Festival to the bold, vibrant designs created by David Hockney for The Rake’s Progress at Glyndebourne Festival. These productions reveal how the stage can become a living gallery.

Through images, music, and behind-the-scenes insight, Helen will explore why opera-makers draw on both historic masterpieces and contemporary visual art to shape atmosphere, deepen narrative, and challenge audiences — creating performances in which sound and image come together as a single, compelling artistic experience.

Anglo-Austrian Helen Astrid is a highly engaging speaker having graduated from the Royal Academy of Music. She performed as a soprano soloist at most of the major venues in the UK including English National Opera, Linbury Theatre Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Garsington Opera and Chelsea Opera at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank.

Her expertise has attracted widespread media coverage such as BBC World News, The Paul O’Grady Show, Broadcasting House and BBC’s Ask the Experts. Helen’s Ted Talk Tell me the truth about Opera has been viewed by 1000s. She is delighted to be speaking at the V&A this Spring.

Previous speaking engagements have been for Courtauld Institute of Art, Wild Arts Opera, Cambridge University, Plymouth University, Marlborough College, Imperial College, Benslow Music, Landmark Arts Centre and Bishopsgate Institute. Helen lives in London and enjoys German Expressionist art, architecture, travelling and tennis.
