Unusual medieval wall art to be unlocked at Stratford’s Guildhall

AN UNUSUAL medieval wall painting is set to be revealed behind a panel at Stratford’s Guildhall.

Volunteer Pamela Devine will unlock the panel on Tuesday October 14 to reveal part of a mural which covers the length of the chapel’s wall.

It depicts what happened to Adam, the biblical character, and his descendants.

One fascinating detail in the painting is a prediction of the terrible flood that led to Noah building his Ark.

Intrigued by this detail, Pamela has immersed herself in the Noah’s Ark story and will be discussing this and other aspects of the painting in a talk in the chapel from 6.30pm until 8pm the same day. The talk is free and there is no need to book.

Pamela is a guide at the chapel and has also published a book entitled “Writing on Shakespeare’s Walls” about the historic graffiti in the chapel.

Pamela said: “This painting hasn’t been given much attention until recently. But investigations over the last few years have brought to light new insights into what the painting means and what mattered to people 500 years ago.”

The painting has also inspired the creation of a new community play, Norah’s Ark, to be directed by Pamela and performed in the chapel next year. Auditions will be held in November.
