Immersive digital art museum reopens in Azabudai Hills

The iconic teamLab Borderless museum has found a fresh home in the Azabudai Hills complex in Tokyo’s Minato Ward.

Jointly developed by teamLab Inc. and Mori Building Co., the teamLab Borderless museum features artworks created by the art group using projection mapping and other technologies.

Visitors are exposed to at least 50 digital installations as they move from one area to another.

For instance, constantly transforming patterns are projected on the walls and across the floor in a large hall, while a countless number of color-changing orbs await spectators in another room.

In an installation titled “Sketch Ocean,” images of fish and other sea creatures drawn by visitors come to life and move around on the walls and other parts of the venue.

According to Mori Building, the predecessor of the museum in Tokyo’s Odaiba district attracted about 2.3 million people in one year after its opening in 2018, with nearly half of the visitors coming from outside Japan.

It gained Guinness World Records certification as the most visited museum dedicated to a single group of artists in 2019.

It was closed in 2022.

A Mori Building representative said the new museum has been upgraded to offer even more immersive experiences.
