Having only taken up painting as a hobby in the first lockdown in 2020, 16-year-old Makenzy’s rise to super stardom in the art scene has been nothing less than phenomenal.
The former Bishopston Comprehensive School pupil’s portraits have led to Makenzy being hailed as one of the most prestigious young artists to come out of the UK in recent times.
Makenzy has taken the art world by storm since her debut at the Royal Academy of Arts Young Artist’s Summer Show. The painting, titled ‘John Tucker’ the portrait of a local farmer, featured John in a black hat and hi-vis jacket received critical acclaim, with comments including ‘we may be experiencing the emergence of Wales’ greatest living artist’.
Makenzy quickly became an internet sensation upon sharing the painting with many viewers across social media commented on the incredible detail and life like quality of the painting.
Her December portrayal of former Welsh rugby legend Alun Wyn Jones to celebrate his retirement pushed the young prodigy back into the limelight once more and gaining widespread acclaim.
The former Wales captain hung up his boots in November 2023 at at the age of 38 after a stellar career which saw him become the most capped player in rugby union history, with 158 Wales caps and a further 12 tests for the British and Irish Lions.
Makenzy’s stunning portrayal showcased her development into one of the nations brightest painters. Such is the popularity of her work, which is now internationally recognised, collectors from across the globe flock to purchase her original pieces as soon as they are available.
Her latest painting shown on her Instagram page to her 15,000 followers shows her trademark intricate brushstrokes and vivid use of light and shade and it’s yet another incredible offering from the talented Swansea artist.
Following her debut solo exhibition at Blackwater Gallery in September 2022, a new exhibition is currently being readied for Blackwater this year and will no doubt be a spectacular showing.
